Hi there! I'm a newly married suburbanite-turned-urbanite, trying to turn our first house (apartment, let's be honest) into our first home, all while trying to make it not look like it's straight out of a Pottery Barn catalog. Welcome to the crazy-ness.

Slower Than Molasses In January

Yeah yeah, I know it's not January anymore. But with how cold it's been around here, might as well be. If you're not from the Midwest (or anywhere cold, for that matter), you probably won't get the little joke up there. Molasses moves slower than all of our grandparents combined (and probably slower than the day that I'm having at work too). Legit. Kind of ironic we're using Grandma's Molasses, huh.

These cookies from Aunt Louise? They get eaten faster than hot-cakes.

What you'll need:
  • 1 c sugar
  • 3/4 c shortening
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 4 tbsp molasses
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 c flour
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp cloves
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp salt
First and foremost, preheat your oven to 350 degrees farenheit.

In a separate medium sized bowl, mix your baking soda, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and salt, and make sure they're thoroughly combined. In your mixing bowl, blend your beaten egg, sugar, shortening, and molasses. Once you have incorporated those, take your separate bowl of dry ingredients and combine them completely. Time for in flour. I like to pour it in in about 3 stages, and fully mix the flour in each time before adding more.

#Nomnombatter. I'm not the one telling you to consume raw eggs, but I won't tattle on you either.

Roll your into 1" balls, and dip just top half in sugar. DO NOT FLATTEN THE BALLS ONTO THE COOKIE SHEET.

Bake those for about 10 minutes, or until the tops just begins to crack.

So dang good.

The edges will be nice and crisp, and the middles nice and soft. Any favorite family recipes that you have? This one seems to be a favorite of ours, especially when it's chilly out! Do share!
