Hi there! I'm a newly married suburbanite-turned-urbanite, trying to turn our first house (apartment, let's be honest) into our first home, all while trying to make it not look like it's straight out of a Pottery Barn catalog. Welcome to the crazy-ness.

Ikea Hack

The fact that our kitchen is legitimately 9'x9' means space is definitely tight. And there is not a lot of storage room. Essentially none. After a while, it just got overwhelming. We always had bowls sitting on the counter top taking up space, and stuff that was stacked literally sitting on the floor.

So, we fixed that.

We didn't want to spend a lot of money, and we wanted something small enough with an ample amount of storage. Where do you go when you want that? Ikea.

We bought the Expedit 2x2 shelving unit for a whopping $39.99.

Super boring. So we spruced it up.

After we assembled it (follow the picture instructions) and primed it (with Zinser primer), Kyle drilled a few holes into the corners to screw the feet in. Now, the "feet" that we used are actually deck-railing-decorative-cap thingys. The ones we picked had a flat edge on the bottom, so they worked nicely. But you could also choose rounded/spherical ones as well. I would suggest using a sander and flattening out a spot on the bottom where it will stand, just to be on the safe side. They came with screws already inserted in them. Make sure that you measure first so your drill holes go into the upright sides, to give it a little more support. Also take a look and make sure that your feet won't stick out farther than the sides/bottom of the shelf. He put some wood glue on the screw and put it in, along with around the edges.

We let it set over night until it was nice and solid, and the primer was dry. Time to paint! We picked out Pittsburgh Paint Ultra in Satin in Pittsburgh Paint's Sea Mist.

We did the inside first, then moved to the outside.

And that is how you turn a boring Ikea bookcase into a nice kitchen shelf!

Bam! What Ikea hacks have you done recently? Any repurposing/refurbishing/redoing in general going on? Tell me!
